Birmingham University: the Barber Institute of Fine Arts and the University Library Special Collections,

Thursday 8th July 2010

The Barber Institute of Fine Arts has been described as ‘one of the finest small galleries in Europe’. Opened in 1939 by Queen Mary this outstanding collection of paintings and sculptures is housed in a Grade ll listed building bequeathed to the University by Lady Barber in memory of her husband. The architecture of the galleries is outstanding and the paintings to be enjoyed in the Institute include masterpieces by Rubens, Van Dyck, Poussin, Gainsborough, Turner, Monet, Degas, Renoir and Van Gogh.
The Birmingham University Library Special Collections is a unique assembly of over 120,000 books of rare value and some three million manuscripts and is a major UK research library having recently received Designated Status as a Collection of National and International Importance.
For the visit is hoped that the Special Collections will have moved to the new Cadbury Research Library in the newly refurbished Muirhead Tower. It is anticipated that a selection of the important artefacts will be made available for the visit.
